Cinque Terre by Sea: Colorful Villages and Vineyards

By Alex Harrington

As The Albatross approached the rugged coastline of Italy’s Cinque Terre, I felt a flutter of excitement that had nothing to do with the breathtaking landscape unfurling before us. This stretch of coastline, with its five iconic villages clinging to steep cliffs, promised stunning scenery, culinary delights, and the potential for new beginnings.

A Love Rekindled in Riomaggiore

Our journey began in Riomaggiore, the southernmost village. The colorful houses stacked haphazardly up the hillside were a vibrant welcome. As we moored The Albatross in the small harbor, I noticed a familiar figure on the dock—Isabella, a woman I had met years ago during a brief stay in Genoa. She was a local artist then, and her paintings captured the very essence of the Mediterranean. We had shared a brief but intense connection, and her unexpected presence stirred up a mix of emotions in me.

“Alex! Is it really you?” she called out, her voice blending surprise and joy.

I smiled, feeling a warmth that had nothing to do with the summer sun. “Isabella, it’s been too long.”

Our reunion was a delightful surprise, and Isabella, with her deep knowledge and love for Cinque Terre, offered to show us around her beloved home. The journey promised to be even more enchanting with her as our guide. Her presence added a layer of magic to our exploration, and her stories brought the villages to life in a way that no guidebook ever could.

Exploring Manarola

Next, we sailed to Manarola, a village renowned for its picturesque beauty. The pastel-colored buildings seemed to tumble down the cliffside into the sparkling blue sea. Isabella led us through narrow streets lined with artisanal shops and quaint cafes. We sampled focaccia and pesto, local specialties that melted in our mouths with each bite.

As we strolled, Isabella shared stories of the village’s history and traditions. Her passion for the region was infectious, and her presence added a layer of magic to our exploration. In the evening, we enjoyed a glass of Sciacchetrà, a local sweet wine, on a terrace overlooking the harbor, the setting sun casting a golden glow over the village.

Corniglia: A Hidden Gem

Unlike the other villages, Corniglia is perched high on a cliff, accessible only by a long flight of steps or a winding road. The effort to reach it was well worth it. The village offered a more tranquil experience, with terraced vineyards and stunning panoramic views of the coastline.

Isabella took us to a small vineyard owned by a friend, where we sampled wines made from the region’s unique grape varieties. The crisp, refreshing flavors of the white wines paired perfectly with the local cheeses and honey we were served. Sitting there, surrounded by the beauty of Corniglia and the warmth of good company, I felt a deep contentment.

Vernazza’s Vibrant Life

Our next stop was Vernazza, a village known for its lively atmosphere and vibrant harbor. The bustling piazza was filled with locals and visitors enjoying the sun and the sea. We explored the medieval castle, which offered stunning views of the village and the surrounding coastline.

Isabella took us to a small trattoria hidden from the main square for lunch. We dined on trofie al pesto, a traditional Ligurian pasta, and fresh seafood caught that morning. The flavors were rich and comforting, a testament to the region’s culinary heritage.

As we wandered through the village, Isabella and I shared stories of our travels and dreams. It was as if no time had passed since our last meeting, and I found myself drawn to her warmth and passion.

The Tranquility of Monterosso al Mare

Our final destination was Monterosso al Mare, the largest and most resort-like of the Cinque Terre villages. The expansive beach was a welcome sight, and we spent the afternoon swimming in the clear, cool waters.

In the evening, we walked along the promenade, the air filled with the scent of lemon trees and the sound of waves gently lapping against the shore. We visited a local winery where we tasted Vermentino and Rossese wines, their flavors reflecting the region’s unique terroir.

As we sat on the beach, watching the stars twinkle above, Isabella and I discussed the future. The connection we had rekindled, so familiar and yet so new, felt natural and right. I couldn’t help but feel a warm sense of nostalgia, and I wondered if perhaps, this time, our paths were meant to converge.

Reflections on Cinque Terre

As we sailed away from Cinque Terre, the memories of its colorful villages, exquisite wines, and the rekindled connection with Isabella filled my heart. The journey had been a feast for the senses, celebrating the region’s beauty and bounty. But more than that, it reminded me of the joy of shared experiences and the possibility of new beginnings. Cinque Terre had always held a special place in my heart, and this journey had only deepened that connection.

With the villages of Cinque Terre fading into the distance, I felt a renewed sense of adventure and anticipation. The Mediterranean continued to beckon, and with Isabella by my side, the journey ahead promised to be even more extraordinary. Here’s to love, discovery, and the endless allure of the sea.
