The moment we anchored The Albatross in the bustling port of Tangier, the city’s vibrant energy and eclectic charm enveloped us. Tangier, perched at the northern tip of Morocco, has long been a cultural crossroads where Africa meets Europe, creating a unique tapestry woven from the threads of diverse traditions and histories. Our night in Tangier promised to immerse into this rich blend of influences, a sensory journey through a city that has captivated travelers for centuries.
The Gateway to Africa
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the city, we made our way from the port into the heart of Tangier. The air was filled with the mingling aromas of street food—spices, grilled meats, and freshly baked bread—a tantalizing prelude to the culinary adventures that awaited us. The narrow, winding streets of the Medina beckoned, their labyrinthine paths echoing with the sounds of daily life and the calls of vendors plying their wares.
Exploring the Medina

Traditional Moroccan craftsmanship stood alongside French architectural flourishes, a testament to the city’s colonial past. With her eye for detail, Liz marveled at the intricate designs of the Berber carpets while Sam haggled good-naturedly with a vendor over a beautifully crafted silver teapot. The lively exchange of languages—Arabic, French, Spanish, and Berber—created a symphony of sounds that highlighted Tangier’s multicultural identity.
A Taste of Tangier
We sought a traditional Moroccan restaurant tucked away in one of the Medina’s quieter alleys for dinner. The decor was a feast for the eyes, with colorful mosaic tiles, plush cushions, and ornate lanterns casting a soft glow over the room. We were welcomed with warm hospitality and a menu that promised to take our taste buds on a journey.
